We Are
Available for SAB or SSA a cappella
I first came across the text for this piece as part of the Yizkor service (a Jewish memorial service on of Yom Kippur) when I was a child. It amalgamates texts that appear in Psalm 144 and Psalm 90, and delivers a powerful message about the preciousness of life and the importance of being mindful of how we live. This text formed the basis of one of my earliest compositions while I was still in college and, revisiting it nearly 20 years later, it still resonates with me deeply.
My goal for this setting was twofold. First, I wanted to create something that evokes both the reverent and urgent nature of the text while still bringing something of a celebratory tone to the piece. After all, one of the best ways to honor life is to celebrate it. Second, I tried to craft an arrangement that could be accessed by a wide range of ensembles. Each part spans an octave or less, breaths are clearly indicated, and there is a fair bit of repetition. At the same time, there are plenty of intricacies for an advanced ensemble to dig into should they choose to!
Both the SAB and SSA (transposed up a third to E minor) score are included with your order.
Please purchase one copy per singer in your ensemble.
